Water is the core of sustainable development and it is curicial. This lesson plan is intended to teach students the importance of clean water, rise awareness about sustainable development goals, use STE(A)M education to adresse these goals and learn to deal with these problems to shape our future.
Objectives :
  • Discover the importance of Water
  • Design water filtration systems with common materials
  • Understand the procedures to purify water
  • To set goals to use water efficiently
  • Express their ideas through art
Real Life Questions :
Why is clean water important?
How water filtration systems work?
How can we reduce water consumption?
*We applied the learning scenerio as a part of etwinning project STEAM for 5PS and worked in transnational teams with participation of 5 schools from Turkey, Portugal, and Greece.(in cooperation with Scientix Ambassadors). It can be applied as a single classroom activity.

A Bottle (Cut in half)
Cotton

 1ST STEP -braınstormıng and dıscussıon

​Ask students:
​Real Life Problem :
Imagine that tomorrow when you wake up there is no clean water. What will happen?  What problems can you have?
Open Break Out Rooms (groups of five ) for students to discuss. Each room selects a spokesperson to share group ideas in the main room with other groups.

 2nd step engıneerıng/ scıence (30 Mın)

Designing Water Filters :Designing Water Filters
Students apply designing process with the help of Science Teacher and her instructions
Materials:
Dirty Water
A Bottle (Cut in half)
Cotton
Sand
Charcoal
Gravel
Rocks
Cut the bottle in half. The bottom part will be the used as the cup water where filtered water falls in. Put the cotton in it. Add sand, charcoal, gravel and rocks in layers. Add the dirty water. Watch it come out clear

3rd step : envıronment ( 30 MIN)

Students are again split into groups of five in Break Out Rooms
Discuss : What can you do to reduce water pollution ?
 Do you think these solutions require international cooperation ?
​Group spokesperson share group findings with other groups in the main room.

 4TH STEP (40 Minutes)

​This week World Water Day is celebrated all around the world. Draw a picture about what you have learned  and celebrate World Water Day.
Teachers can do this as an extension activity and may ask them share their drawings on a common Padlet Wall.


Assessment : 
Each students writes a brief reflection on their learning experience on a common Padlet Wall.
What is the most important thing you learned today?
What do you want to learn more ? Why ?
What can you do with what you know?
